Before you mail me

What not to mail

E-mail is safe unless it contains programs. (Data and documents are generally fine, programs are not). If you send me a program, I will not run it, as it could contain a virus.

  1. If you want to sell me something, DON'T! Do not send me unsolicited commercial e-mail (that is, spam).
  2. Please do not send me Microsoft Office documents. Microsoft Office documents are not stored in any open standard format.
  3. Please do not send me Flash animations.
  4. If you are sending text, please send it as plain text or (standards compliant) HTML. If you use your favorite word processor, slide tool, etc, and send it in that program's format, then you are forcing me install proprietary software on whatever machine I read them on. I will not do this.
  5. Do not send huge attachments. Large attachments are better put on a webserver somewhere, and then you can e-mail me the URI for the file instead. There are also some free file upload services that can be used.

What you can mail

These are all good document standards: Plain text, HTML, Rich Text Format, pages without scripts, photos (JPEG files, PNG, GIF), SMIL and so on. All these can be sent as messages or as attachments to messages. I can read them with a variety of software programs, and they cannot contain viruses. If you don't need anything else, then use plain text.

For formatted documents PDF is strongly preferred.

Huge attachments

Please use any of these free file upload services for sending huge attachments:
